Can You Reverse Gum Disease?

Can You Reverse Gum Disease?

Gum disease affects nearly half of all American adults. But there’s good news. If you catch it early, you can completely reverse and eliminate gum disease. Read on, and learn more in this blog from Cibolo Family Smiles.

Gingivitis Is Reversible, But Periodontitis Is Not Reversible – Early Treatment Is Key!

So, can gum disease be reversed? The answer is “yes” and “no.” The first stage of gum disease is known as “gingivitis.” Gingivitis happens when bacteria attack and infect your gums. This causes inflammation, gum sensitivity, and gum discoloration, among other symptoms. However, gingivitis does not cause any permanent damage to your gums or teeth. Because of this, it can be reversed. With proper in-office and at-home care, you can completely restore your gum health.

This is not true of the later stages of gum disease, which are commonly known as “periodontitis.” In periodontitis, the bacterial infection spreads, and begins attacking your gums and your teeth. While it’s possible to control this infection and prevent further damage, it’s impossible to completely eliminate the infection. You will need to get specialized periodontal cleanings for the rest of your life. That’s the only way to control your gum disease and prevent further complications.

How Do I Reverse Gingivitis And Keep My Mouth Healthy?

If you believe you have gingivitis, it’s important to take steps immediately to restore your oral health, protect your gums, and eliminate your gum disease before it progresses to the irreversible stage of periodontitis. Here’s how!

  • Get a deep cleaning at Cibolo Family Smiles – The first step in treating gingivitis is a deep cleaning, also known as “scaling and root planing.” In this procedure, Dr. Patel will clean deeply between your gums and teeth. He will remove bacteria-filled plaque and tartar, and smooth out the roots of your teeth to prevent bacterial buildup. This takes two appointments, since half of your mouth will be cleaned at each appointment.

  • Take antibiotics as directed – Dr. Patel may also prescribe antibiotic pills or mouthwash after your treatment. Take these as directed to kill the bacteria that cause gum disease.

  • Brush and floss properly – Primarily, gum disease is caused by improper oral hygiene. So make sure you brush at least 2-3 times per day for 2 minutes, and use fluoride toothpaste. You should also floss at least once per day to eliminate bacteria, plaque, and tartar that may build up between your teeth.

  • Maintain a healthy diet – Eating a “tooth-healthy” diet helps keep oral bacteria under control. Avoid sugary drinks in favor of tap water. Reduce sugary and starchy foods like candy, cookies, chips, and pretzels. Try to eat mostly whole grains, lean meats, healthy dairy, and fresh fruits and vegetables.

  • Quit unhealthy habits like smoking and drinking – Smoking and oral tobacco use are heavily associated with a higher risk of gum disease. Excessive alcohol use is also a common contributing factor. If you quit smoking and reduce your alcohol use, you’ll have a much better chance of reversing gingivitis.
